Stop scaring people with lies

Some opinions, comments and links relating to what is happening in this great nation and, in particular, in Western Colorado.

Way back in my previous life, so to speak, when I was the Undersheriff in Kit Carson County, Colorado, I was at the fairgrounds in Burlington, when a young mother walked by almost dragging a little boy, who was obviously not wanting to leave the carnival.

As we met on the walkway, the mother told her ward, “See there is the sheriff. If you don’t behave, he will throw you in jail.”

I looked at the little boy and could see the fear on his face. I bent down and said, “You tell your mother that we don’t throw little boys in jail. We like kids and we are always willing to help you. Okay?”

After I received a reluctant nod from the teary-eyed young man, I looked at the mother and asked her bluntly not to use uniformed officers to scare her child. I explained that he may need a policeman or sheriff’s deputy to help him some day and the last thing we want is for him to be afraid to call on us.

I found out later that I was not alone in this sort of encounter. One police officer told me of a young girl that became separated from her family and, rather than respond to the calls of police officers looking for her, she hid from them. I heard many other similar stories from my peers over the years.

On a much larger scale, what is happening now is very similar to what happened to those young people: they were made to fear someone who was really there to help, and the comments made by President Obama and his minions are tantamount to telling children to be afraid of police officers. Every time that the president condones the actions of groups like Black Lives Matter, he in effect is telling everyone that all police officers are bad and that they will shoot you based only on the color of your skin. He is wrong and he has literally become an accomplice in the recent violence perpetrated against our law enforcement community. These young minds that have vacuums needing filled are looking to the first black man to occupy the oval office and rationalizing that they are doing what he wants them to do when they display a hate for anyone carrying a badge.

Oh sure, Barack Obama will walk up to a lectern as soon as he can following another attack on a police officer and he will give a speech telling everyone that he is praying for the families and the victims. Then, almost without taking a breath, he will in some way either endorse the “peaceful” demonstrations or bring up his favorite topic of the moment, usually gun control.

And, his followers listen. They conveniently forget his negative attitude when he said that police “acted stupidly.” They choose not to acknowledge his references to non-existent statistics, the latest being that “we flood communities with so many guns that it is easier for a teenager to buy a Glock than get his hands on a computer or even a book.”

For most people, that statement is a blatant lie on it surface, but to those who are like that small child being dragged home by his mother, it is a scary statement and they believe it because of its source. Like that small child, most of these people are not stupid, they are merely ignorant, but when the mainstream media chooses to promulgate the lie, it becomes extremely difficult to expose the truth. When they keep playing the sound byte without giving any reference to the other side of the coin, we find ourselves at a great disadvantage. But, we must not give up. Ignorance can be fixed. The first tool in our toolbox is our vote. We must vote these people out. The second tool is our common sense. We must be willing to bend over and tell the truth to those who are not being told the truth by their leaders or by their news and entertainment sources.

Remember, I only send out these missives to those who have asked for them. I do not share your email addresses with anyone and I use the Reagan email precisely because they don’t share or sell the addresses either. If you are getting this because someone forwarded it to you and you don’t want it, tell him or her not to forward any more. On the other hand, if you received a copy and would like to see more of my ranting, simply drop me a line at I will put you on my exclusive, but growing list.
